WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Two more cases of an antibiotic-resistant staph infection were confirmed Thursday in the Forsyth County School system.Dr. Chris Ohl, an infectious disease specialist at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, appeared on WXII 12 News Thursday to answer questions. Click Here To Read The Q&AWinston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and the Forsyth County Health Department said one of the cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) occurred at West Forsyth High School, and the other occurred at Mineral Springs Elementary School.Letters have been sent home to parents at those schools to help them understand the situation.Officials said they don't want to alarm parents but that more cases could occur.Thursday's development came after school officials said Wednesday that six East Forsyth High School football players were found to have the bacteria.WXII 12 News also learned Thursday that Yadkin County school officials closed a classroom at Starmount High School because a teacher was suspected of having the bacteria.The class was closed as a precaution and was being cleaned.Health officials said they are doing what they can to prevent more cases, but that even if everything is done right, it's not possible to have zero risk.Doug Hinson, spokesman for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, said Wednesday that the Forsyth County incidents occurred in September at East Forsyth High School and that the school is cleaning and sanitizing wrestling mats, locker rooms and football pads.The students have returned to class.It is the same condition that shut down several Virginia schools on Wednesday.Ashton Bonds, a 17-year-old senior at Staunton River High School in Bedford County, Va., died Monday after being diagnosed with MRSA.Staph infections, including the serious MRSA strain, have been spreading through schools nationwide in recent weeks, according to health and education officials.The illness is also blamed for Friday's postponement of a football game in Grayson County, Va.
